SUMMARY:Second Critical Edition of Whitehead Conference: Whitehead’s Harvard Lectures\, 1925–1927
DESCRIPTION:General Theme: What does the second volume of Whitehead’s Harvard lectures tell us about his philosophy and its development? \n\n\n\nThe first volume of Whitehead’s Harvard lectures\, published in early 2017 as The Harvard Lectures of Alfred North Whitehead\, 1924–1925: Philosophical Presuppositions of Science (HL1)\, established that Whitehead used his Harvard classroom to test out his philosophical ideas\, a conclusion supported by the fact that Whitehead would later write in the preface to Process and Reality that “In the expansion of these lectures to the dimensions of the present book\, I have been greatly indebted to the critical difficulties suggested by the members of my Harvard classes” (xiv–xv). \n\n\n\nThrough a careful reading of this first year of Whitehead’s lectures\, the anthology Whitehead at Harvard: 1924–1925—based on the ninth WRP conference “Whitehead Revealed: Examining Whitehead’s First Year of Harvard Lectures”—showed Whitehead’s indebtedness to Harvard colleague Lawrence J. Henderson\, explored his ventures into cutting-edge quantum theory\, re-examined his relationship with Plato\, Kant\, and Hartshorne\, and challenged longstanding theories about the development of his thought\, such as Lewis Ford’s “temporal atomism” thesis. \n\n\n\nWith the January 2021 publication of the second volume of Whitehead’s Harvard lectures as The Harvard Lectures of Alfred North Whitehead\, 1925–1927: General Metaphysical Problems of Science (HL2)\, scholars now have access to the laboratory of Whitehead’s classroom for his second and third years in America\, from the time just after the publication of his Science and the Modern World\, through his delivery of the 1926 Lowell lectures that would become Religion in the Making\, and up to his delivery of the Barbour-Page lectures that would become Symbolism: Its Meaning and Effect. \n\n\n\nInterested in submitting a paper? See our call for papers. \n\n\n\nProposals are due by 30 June 2022. \n\n\n\nFull papers are due by 1 September 2022. \n\n\n\nPapers presented at the conference will also be eligible for consideration for inclusion in a special issue of Process Studies that will focus on HL2. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn More & Register

SUMMARY:Process Pop-up: Process and Religious Pluralism
DESCRIPTION:Join a dynamic discussion on process and religious pluralism\, using Bruce Epperly’s recently published book The Elephant is Running: Process and Open and Relational Theologies and Religious Pluralism as a springboard for conversation. \n\n\n\nHow should Christians respond to the dynamic changes in the North American and global religious landscape? What resources do process and openness theologies provide for interspiritual seekers and religious adventurers? Process theologian and pastor Bruce Epperly reflects on his latest book. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP at process & faith

SUMMARY:Process Pop-up: The Deeper Roots of Mass Shootings
DESCRIPTION:Join a dynamic discussion on the deeper roots of mass shootings\, inspired by process scholar Sheri Kling’s recent piece on the Cobb Institute blog Process in Praxis titled “Are Fragmentation\, Trauma\, and Demoralization at the Root of Mass Shootings?” \n\n\n\n“Rather than just arguing about whether the problem stems from the individuals or the guns\, I’d like to suggest that the roots may lie even deeper. And until we are willing to follow the threads all the way down\, we will never find a way out of the crisis of mass shootings. I strongly believe that the roots of this problem are cultural fragmentation\, an epidemic of trauma\, and widespread demoralization. In other words\, we are living in a sick society that is producing mass shootings out of its sickness.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP at process & faith

SUMMARY:Innersections Reading/Listening Group: Armand Hammer\, D.Z. Phillips
DESCRIPTION:This 6-week weekly Zoom meeting will focus on the catalog of the alternative underground rap duo Armand Hammer and a dialogue between them and the work of philosopher of religion D.Z. Phillips to investigate regions of similarity in questions of the boundaries between religion and life. \n\n\n\nArmand Hammer is known for a dense style of lyricism and soundscapes that engage the darker sides of existence with little to no hope of relief. Phillips presents a philosophy of religion that takes seriously the sense of religion\, with its value extending outside of the realms commonly thought of as “religious\,” such as the sonic textures and dissonant verbal offerings of Armand Hammer. Each week\, we will discuss a different Armand Hammer album in concert with an essay from Phillips’ collection entitled Recovering Religious Concepts: Closing Epistemic Divides\, looking at how both can inform each other in explorations on the supposed gap between the idea of God and the world. Every Friday at 12:30pm PDT to 1:30pm PDT\, June 3\, 2022 to July 15\, 2022. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin with zoom via CPS

SUMMARY:Economics for a Full World
DESCRIPTION:Because of the exponential economic growth since World War II\, we now live in a full world\, but we still behave as if it were empty\, with ample space and resources for the indefinite future. The founding assumptions of neoclassical economics\, developed in the empty world\, no longer hold\, as the aggregate burden of the human species is reaching—or\, in some cases\, exceeding—the limits of nature at the local\, regional\, and planetary levels. The prevailing obsession with economic growth puts us on the path to ecological collapse\, sacrificing the very sustenance of our well-being and survival. To reverse this ominous trajectory\, we must transition toward a steady-state economy focused on qualitative development\, as opposed to quantitative growth\, and the interdependence of the human economy and global ecosphere. Developing policies and institutions for a steady-state economy will require us to revisit the question of the purpose and ends of the economy. \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker: Ecological Economist\, Emeritus Professor University of Maryland\, former Senior Economist in World Bank environmental Division\, former Alumni Professor of Economics\, Louisiana State University. In 1996\, he was awarded the Right Livelihood Award for “defining a path of ecological economics that integrates the key elements of ethics\, quality of life\, environment and community.” PhD Vanderbilt University; BA Rice University. Author of Beyond Growth\, and Steady-State Economics among other books. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nREgister

SUMMARY:Interfaith Explorations Summer 2022: Spirit and the Movies II
DESCRIPTION:After the overwhelming success of our Spring 2022 session of ‘Spirit and the Movies’\, we have decided to continue our exploration of film and spirituality. After we see a film (a movie\, a documentary\, a super bowl advertisement) we are inwardly moved. We wonder to ourselves: How did it inspire me? Challenge me? Move me? What did I learn from it? What questions does it raise for me? It is especially meaningful if we can discuss this with others – we grow through this discussion. In this eight-week session\, we will make use of films and their reviews as springboards for our own soulful reflections. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister at The Interfaith Center

\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin with zoom via CPS

SUMMARY:Astrobiology\, Exo-Philosophy and Cosmic Religion Conference
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 10th Anniversary Conference of the Whitehead Research Project (WRP)\, and the first Center for Process Studies (CPS) conference in new partnership with Willamette University\, the foremost goal of this conference is to illuminate the scientific\, philosophical and religious/theological resources of process philosophy for current discussions in Astrobiology. \n\n\n\nDrawing upon the work of Alfred North Whitehead\, Teilhard de Chardin\, Henri Bergson and a variety of others\, the event aims to explore fresh themes of process\, organism\, temporality\, novelty\, experience\, value\, and mind in the context of the philosophical\, scientific and religious layers of astrobiological research. \n\n\n\nCollectively\, the Center for Process Studies and the Whitehead Research Project have a laudable history of organizing cutting-edge conferences at the intersection of science\, philosophy\, and religion; and of hosting a variety of eminent thinkers from David Bohm and Alex Vilenkin to George Ellis\, Charles Hartshorne\, Judith Butler and Graham Harman.  \n\n\n\nSponsored by the John Templeton Foundation\, this new conference continues this legacy by bringing together sixteen scholars across science\, philosophy and theology for a three-day exploration of “Astrobiology\, Exo-Philosophy and Cosmic Religion.” Although registered attendance is limited\, four evening plenary lectures by Steven J. Dick\, Constance Bertka\, Douglas A. Vakoch and Chelsea Haramia are open to the public at Willamette University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn More

SUMMARY:Process Pop-Up: Process Theology and the Enneagram
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Ken Pearson & Jay McDaniel \n\n\n\nThe enneagram teaches you who you are not—Enneagram master teacher\, Suzanne Stabile \n\n\n\nProcess theology invites us to imagine God as “in process” with us\, adapting to our unique situation and context by availing us of fresh possibilities for a journey into wholeness\, relative to our personality and propensities.  We can become more available to God’s living presence by understanding our gifts and limitations and appreciating the gifts of others who are different from us.  God works in them in their ways\, just as God works in us in our ways.  With its powerful typology\, the Enneagram contributes significantly to this self-understanding and appreciation.  It also helps us recognize that\, so often our gifts our also our sins\, thus avoiding the liabilities of self-deception.  Our hour together will provide an opportunity to consider the Enneagram types\, to see their relevance to process theology\, and to consider how\, together\, the Enneagram and process theology might help us grow in our potential to help heal a broken world.  The wholeness we seek is not personal alone\, but social and ecological too. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP at Process & Faith

SUMMARY:Process Pop-up: The Kyoto School: a Buddhist Contribution to Ecological Civilization
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Jared Morningstar\n\n\n\nJoin a sophisticated discussion of the Kyoto School of philosophy and how these cosmopolitan Buddhist thinkers offer resources for building ecological civilization. \n\n\n\nFrom The Kyoto School: True Emptiness\, Wondrous Being website: \n\n\n\n“The Kyoto School was founded by Nishida Kitaro at the beginning of the 20th century\, and now covers three generations of philosophers who have endeavoured to express the insights of the East in the philosophical language of the West. As they did so\, however\, they have in fact created a new kind of philosophy\, a radically new way of thinking from the standpoint of emptiness – and empathy – which goes beyond the limited scope of traditional Western philosophy\, which is the standpoint of being – and that of the self-centred calculative mind\, cut off from a true experience of reality. Their insights will be of interest to those interested in current research about the nature of consciousness and cognition\, as well as those concerned by the inadequacy of the prevalent Western mode of thinking in tackling social\, political\, economic and environmental issues.” \n\n\n\nThe Kyoto School and its representatives offer a unique dialogue with traditions of Process thought\, as both maintain a skepticism of the dominant substance ontology of much of mainline Western thinking. In his forward to Nishitani’s masterpiece\, Religion and Nothingness\, scholar Winston L. King writes that \n\n\n\n“One other possibility remains [for dialogue between the Kyoto School and Western thought] in the field of American philosophy\, and one that has been slightly explored already. To this writer it seems to have the greatest potential for sustaining a full philosophical-religious contact between Buddhist East and Christian West of any thought pattern in America. This is the so-called process philosophy which had its roots in the thought of A. N. Whitehead\, especially in his seminal Process and Reality” (Winston L. King\, “Foreward” in Religion and Nothingness by Keiji Nishitani\, Nanzan Studies in Religion and Culture. Berkeley: University of California Press\, 1983\, xxi). \n\n\n\nThis pop-up will examine the specific resources provided by these philosophers of emptiness for collaborating in the project of ecological civilization. \n\n\n\nThis pop-up will be hosted on Zoom by Jared Morningstar. The session will last approximately one hour. Resources pertaining to the topic are linked below as springboards for discussion. SUMMARY:Process Pop-up: Buddhist Disenchantment & Process Reenchantment
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Doug Holmes\n\n\n\nBuddhists have long taught that the spiritual life eventually requires one to become disenchanted with the world. Process thinkers have suggested that to overcome our civilizational ills we need to reenchant the world that modernity has disenchanted. Do we have to choose\, or can we have both? We’ll examine some quotes about reenchantment and disenchantment from the process philosopher David Ray Griffin and the Theravadin Buddhist teacher Ajahn Chah. Process thought and Buddhism have a long and fruitful history\, but will this drive a wedge between them? Join us for an enchanted hour as we divine into these questions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP at Process & Faith
