SUMMARY:Teilhard and Whitehead on Hope | Jay McDaniel and Ernie Tamminga
DESCRIPTION:From The American Teilhard Association\n\n\n\nFeaturing Jay McDaniel\, PhD and Ernie Tamminga\, PhD \n\n\n\nWe live in a time of need\, where people throughout the world seek visions of hope. This discussion explores the shared vision of Teilhard de Chardin and Alfred North Whitehead\, both of whom see the universe as an evolutionary process with inwardness or subjectivity present from the very beginning. Teilhard emphasizes a cosmic pull toward the Omega Point\, where love becomes all-encompassing\, and describes the emergence of the noosphere—a sphere of collective human thought and consciousness—as a critical phase in this evolution. Whitehead\, similarly\, envisions a divine lure guiding all actual entities toward richer experiences and individuation\, suggesting that love and creativity are not incidental to the cosmos but intrinsic to its unfolding. Tamminga and McDaniel will explore ways in which the two perspectives can be combined to form a meaningful\, scientifically informed\, and spiritually rich vision for human beings at this critical stage in history. \n\n\n\nRSVP required to receive ZOOM info. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nrsvp via Zoom

SUMMARY:Process Pop-Up: From Amipotence to All-Encompassing Mercy: Integrating Oord’s Theology of Love into the Islamic Tradition
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, Adis Duderija\, a scholar of Islamic theology\, will explore his agreement with Thomas Jay Oord’s critique of classical theistic omnipotence and his compelling concept of amipotence.  \n\n\n\nDrawing from Oord’s work as well as his own scholarship\, Dr. Duderija will guide participants through the theological landscape\, examining both the obstacles and opportunities for integrating amipotence within the Islamic interpretive tradition. We’ll delve into how we can reframe our understanding of the Qur’an and its portrayal of God’s mercy\, emphasizing that divine love and mercy are not just attributes but the essence of God’s nature.  \n\n\n\nExpect to engage in thought-provoking discussions about the implications for human flourishing and well-being within our faith traditions. \n\n\n\nTopics include: \n\n\n\n\nCritique of Classical Theism: Examination of Oord’s critique of traditional concepts of omnipotence and the introduction of amipotence.\n\n\n\nIntegration into Islamic Tradition: Exploration of theological obstacles and opportunities for incorporating amipotence within the Islamic interpretive framework.\n\n\n\nUnderstanding Divine Attributes: Discussion on the Qur’an’s portrayal of God’s attributes\, particularly focusing on mercy (Ar-Rahman) and its implications for divine love.\n\n\n\nHuman Flourishing and Well-Being: Analysis of how the concept of amipotence relates to human well-being and the challenges of defining and applying these concepts in various contexts.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRSVP required to receive ZOOM info. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nrsvp at Process & Faith

SUMMARY:Work-in-Process Seminar | James Kearns: “Seeing Human Nature”: A. N. Whitehead and Jason Brown’s differing patterns of Feeling in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway
DESCRIPTION:The Work-In-Process seminar series aims to provide a space for regular exchange between researchers working on the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead. In this session\, James Kearns will present on “‘Seeing Human Nature’: A. N. Whitehead and Jason Brown’s differing patterns of Feeling in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway” \n\n\n\nBy revisiting the limitations of the dominant cognitivist hypothesis through which brain process is understood via computational modelling\, James examines two apparently opposing (yet “continuous”) accounts of the philosophy of organism in Virginia Woolf’s fourth novel\, Mrs Dalloway—Alfred North Whitehead’s process of “concrescence\,” a “coming together” (as it were) of the many into one\, and Jason Brown’s formulation of microgenetic theory which presumes individuation\, not combination\, that is to say\, a cognitive process of whole-to-part transition\, or one into many. Bringing to the forefront the “valuation” of Septimus Warren Smith who\, according to Woolf\, “was invented to complete the character of Mrs Dalloway\,” James argues that Clarissa Dalloway’s mode of fictionalising Septimus post-mortem is not only an operating factor in what constitutes “self-completion\,” a term provided by Brown to express a recurring process through which our emotional response to objects and others in the external world may be said to mirror or to supplement our needs\, but\, ultimately\, a mode by which Woolf herself comes to memorialise the early death of her brother\, Thoby Stephen. \n\n\n\nThe seminar is completely free and we welcome everyone regardless of their academic position. If you want to present your own work or simply attend the seminar\, please get in touch with espt@milanstuermer.com to register. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn More

SUMMARY:John Cobb & Friends Gathering: Sheri Kling
DESCRIPTION:Topic: A Season of Darkness and Light \n\n\n\nPresenters: Sheri D. Kling \n\n\n\nCosmologically\, this period of late fall marks the increase in hours of darkness until the winter solstice when the hours of light begin to make a return. Many religions have major holidays during this period. For some\, the period of darkness is not feared but is celebrated as a time of rest and renewal or of waiting in a kind of pregnant pause. Most celebrate the increase in light and see this turning of the season as the welcome return of the energies of rebirth and growth. \n\n\n\nIn this Cobb & Friends gathering\, Dr. Sheri Kling\, director of Process & Faith\, will introduce some of the major holidays in late fall and early winter\, noting their significance in each tradition. We’ll look at Diwali\, Advent\, Hanukkah\, St. Lucia Day\, Winter Solstice\, Christmas\, Epiphany\, Kwanzaa\, New Year’s Eve\, and Lunar New Year. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn More & RSVP

SUMMARY:The Microbiome: Theological Implications Webinar | John Pohl
DESCRIPTION:A metaphysical understanding of God in the world can be assisted by advances in science. Scientific discoveries such as quantum indeterminacy\, dark energy\, and the genetics underlying biological evolution have changed how science will proceed as well as how we may interpret the Divine. The study of the human microbiome is an example of discovering how the microorganisms in\, on\, and around our bodies influence us physiologically while also affecting us in a potential prehensive\, panentheistic\, and panexperiential way. As science begins to understand the objective processes of the human microbiome more fully\, philosophers and theologians should begin to consider models of how interactions between the microbiome and the human body subjectively improve our understanding of God. \n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter \n\n\n\nJohn Pohl MD DThM is a professor of pediatric gastroenterology at the University Of Utah in Salt Lake City\, Utah. He has published many clinical research articles and has been the chief editor for a pediatric gastroenterology textbook. He has a busy clinical practice and has a specific clinical interest in cystic fibrosis. He has recently received his DThM degree from Northwind Theological Seminary. Previously\, he has written articles for BioLogos and God and Nature Magazine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Work-in-Process Seminar | Maria Regina Brioschi: Public Philosophy: How Process Thought May Help Understand Technology Today
DESCRIPTION:The Work-In-Process seminar series aims to provide a space for regular exchange between researchers working on the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead. In this session\, Maria Regina Brioschi will present on “Public Philosophy: How Process Thought May Help Understand Technology Today” \n\n\n\nHer paper will discuss ongoing research on public philosophy and its application to the philosophy of technology and current debates. It is divided into three parts\, each using a different method. The first part briefly introduces public philosophy. The second part illustrates the main advantages of adopting a processual approach to the philosophy of technology. Finally\, the third part presents a single case study: creativity and genAI. In particular\, Brioschi will adopt Whitehead’s processual perspective to assess how creative genAI is. \n\n\n\nThe seminar is completely free and we welcome everyone regardless of their academic position. SUMMARY:John Cobb & Friends Gathering: David Rosen\, Osman Örs\, and Sheri Kling
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Relational Abrahamic Faiths \n\n\n\nPresenters: David Rosen\, Osman Örs\, and Sheri D. Kling\, PhD \n\n\n\nSeveral locations around the world have taken concrete steps toward interreligious understanding and relationship by creating communities of faith that house all three Abrahamic traditions: Judaism\, Christianity\, and Islam. The House of One in Berlin\, Germany and the Abrahamic Family House on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi are two such communities. Each has its own unique way of approaching its mission. \n\n\n\nSeeking to learn more\, Sheri Kling\, director of Process & Faith\, reached out to invite a representative from each community to join her in this presentation to the Cobb & Friends gathering. Rabbi David Rosen and Imam Osman Örs readily agreed. They’ll share highlights and images from their communities and discuss the joys and challenges they’ve experienced. Dr. Kling will facilitate the conversation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn More & RSVP

SUMMARY:Work-in-Process Seminar | Katarina Perovic: I am a Process and so are You: The Process Philosophy Approach to the Self
DESCRIPTION:Katarina will argue that a process approach is not only a promising strategy in philosophy of time\, but that it is also a promising approach in the metaphysics of the persistence of objects\, metaphysics of the self\, and personal identity. She will argue that static approaches to various dimensions of the self fail to capture the fundamentally dynamic aspects of our identity and that a shift to a process approach makes much more sense in accounts of both intrinsic and relational properties of the self. \n\n\n\nThe seminar is completely free and we welcome everyone regardless of their academic position. SUMMARY:A Conversation on the Corruption of America’s Food Industry | Austin Frerick & Flagstaff College
DESCRIPTION:Join Flagstaff College and author Austin Frerick for a conversation on his book Barons: Money\, Power\, and the Corruption of America’s Food Industry. \n\n\n\nBarons is the story of seven titans of the food industry\, their rise to power\, and the consequences for workers\, eaters\, and democracy itself. Barons paints a stark portrait of corporate consolidation\, but it also shows that a fair\, healthy\, and prosperous food industry is possible—if we take back power from the barons who have robbed us of it. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin via flagstaff college website

SUMMARY:Interweavings: Sacred Practices\, Dynamic Texts
DESCRIPTION:How might ancient texts speak to us afresh today? Can pre–modern practices be revitalized and re-imagined to address modern concerns? \n\n\n\nRabbi Leila Gal Berner and Sheri D. Kling strongly believe that there is still something life-giving in both ancient texts and pre-modern practices\, and that both can be explored in dynamic ways while still being grounded in timeless wisdom. \n\n\n\nOnce Rabbi Berner was introduced to the Christian contemplative practice of lectio divina—a Latin phrase meaning “sacred reading”—she immediately fell in love with its ability to drop her into a living experience of biblical text. She wanted other Jews to have that same experience\, and created a uniquely Jewish expression of lectio divina that she has named Kriat Hakodesh (Reading the Holy) reflected in her book\, Listening to the Heart of Genesis: A Contemplative Path.  \n\n\n\nSheri Kling has had similar experiences with Christian contemplative practices\, and has refashioned three of them—lectio divina\, praying with icons\, and praying with the imagination—into a transreligious practice she calls Dream Divina. While the target of contemplation in her practice is one’s individual dream and its images\, the underlying spiritual “technologies” of the Christian practices still carry the same power to reveal the presence of the Sacred. \n\n\n\nIn this event\, Rabbi Berner and Dr. Kling will share their own experiences with reshaping traditional practices to reawaken modern sensibilities to potentially transforming encounters with texts and with God. \n\n\n\nRSVP required to receive ZOOM info. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nrsvp at Process & Faith

DESCRIPTION:This is a two-part workshop with Sheri Kling on November 12 and 19 at 7PM ET. One registration grants access to both sessions. \n\n\n\nWe are a fragmented people in deep pain. In the West – and especially in the United States  – we are divided societally\, as evidenced in our political polarization and the rise of hate groups\, we are divided interpersonally as evidenced in increasing loneliness and isolation\, and we are divided intrapersonally\, as is evidenced by the exploding usage of antidepressants and the correlation between early adverse childhood experience and adult suffering and illness. \n\n\n\nEvery day the world seems to tell us that we are isolated individuals struggling to matter\, to belong\, and to change our negative experiences. If we are to move toward wholeness societally\, interpersonally\, and intrapersonally\, neither religion nor psychological theory and practice are enough because the very worldview that we are swimming in as a culture – materialistic dualism – is a major reason for the splitting we experience. Could there be a way to look at both cosmos and psyche that promotes wholeness rather than separation? \n\n\n\nWhether the topic is politics\, racism\, or climate change and environmental destruction\, the hard truth is that we cannot effect a change in the popular imagination with facts and reason alone. In this workshop\, Sheri D. Kling will offer new ways to look at both cosmos and psyche and show how a spiritual practice of dream work can be an embodied\, transformational practice that reveals a Reality that shows us that we matter\, we belong\, and we can experience positive change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn more & Register

SUMMARY:Work-in-Process Seminar | Christopher Hill: The experience of suffering: the path(étique) of AN Whitehead and Michel Henry
DESCRIPTION:Suffering is an experience that arrives unmediated from ‘nowhere’ yet from ‘within’\, ineluctably subjective\, sui generis\, at best an experience vaguely and inadequately comparable. It is a phenomenon that takes a purely phenomenological analysis beyond its own limit. Yet\, if we may struggle describing the phenomenon of suffering\, can we at least establish the ontological possibility of suffering experience? In this presentation Christopher Hill answers the question affirmatively by drawing on the respective thought of AN Whitehead the ‘process metaphysician’ and Michel Henry the ‘process phenomenologist’ (Mullarky\, 2006:48pp). Though disparate thinkers sharing little but an apparent consent to the processual nature of reality\, Hill argues that both offer in their respective yet complimentary ways a fundamental ontological basis for the experience of suffering.  \n\n\n\nThe seminar is completely free and we welcome everyone regardless of their academic position. SUMMARY:Work-in-Process Seminar | Paul Stenner: Reflections upon Transdisciplinary Applications of Whiteheadian Process Thinking within Social and Human Sciences
DESCRIPTION:With Lennart Posch and Gabriel Bianchi\, Paul Stenner has recently been involved in assembling a Special Issue of the journal Human Affairs which deals with the relevance of Whiteheadian process thinking to social and human sciences.  His contribution to the Special Issue provides an overview of Whitehead’s thinking which stresses the differences and continuities at play within the three main phases of Whitehead’s career. The paper is available here: A.N. Whitehead and Process Thought (degruyter.com) and can be discussed during the meeting. After introducing this paper\, Paul Stenner will reflect upon some of his research which aims to apply process thinking to a number of topics at a variety of scales within several disciplines\, but always with a ‘transdisciplinary’ orientation. At the broadest scale\, Whitehead’s ‘turn’ towards a critique of scientific materialism provides the basis for a series of so-called ‘postmodern’ perspectives springing from a new sociological orientation to ‘the modern world’. At a smaller scale of focus\, Whitehead provides powerful ways of re-thinking a host of psychological questions from the nature of feeling and emotion\, through the role of the brain in the production of experience\, to the problem of psychosocial transition. \n\n\n\nThe seminar is completely free and we welcome everyone regardless of their academic position. SUMMARY:Process Pop-Up: Faith & Feeling
DESCRIPTION:In theological circles\, German philosopher Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768–1834) may be best known for his text\, On Religion: Speeches to Its Cultured Despisers\, his effort to defend religion from Enlightenment skeptics. He’s also been a subject of interest to process thinkers like Philip Clayton\, Thandeka\, and\, more recently\, Chad Bahl. In his doctoral research\, Chad has been putting Schleirmacher’s thoughts on faith and feeling into conversation with the work of Alfred North Whitehead. \n\n\n\nHe has found that “In both process thought and Schleiermacher’s philosophy\, the essence of existence is not lifeless matter or dogmatic precepts. Rather\, it is lived experience. In this lived experience\, we are interconnected both as human beings and in fellowship with the Divine.” \n\n\n\nSchleiermacher is known for talking about faith as a feeling of “absolute dependence.” Resonant with Whitehead’s thinking about God’s aims for every actual event\, Chad describes this as a “natural result of being in tune with our deepest intuitions. It arises from our recognition of the presence and purpose of God in our lives.” As we cultivate our awareness of God – through spiritual practices like contemplation – this feeling naturally arises as a kind of “God-consciousness” that is “developed as we experience community with others\, fellowship with the Divine\, interaction with nature\, the Gospel story\, and much more.” \n\n\n\nWhile each of us may experience the Divine differently\, it is this “personal perception\, (not reason\, dogma\, or scientific proof)\, which serves as the centering principle for faith.” According to Chad\, attuning to this interior faith and feeling is crucial to human life. “We become fully actualized human beings when we realize fellowship with the Divine in our experiences of both Creator and creation.” \n\n\n\nRSVP required to receive ZOOM info. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nrsvp at Process & Faith

SUMMARY:Process Pop-Up: Hinduism\, Ever-Evolving
DESCRIPTION:In his video\, “Evolution and Vedanta\,” Swami Padmanabha talks about God or Love as the ultimate supreme reality\, and how God along with all realities is dynamic\, ever-evolving\, and growing. Reality is not made up of fixed\, changeless substances; rather\, it is marked by what he calls “deep evolution” – a sacred evolution at the very depths of reality. \n\n\n\nIn this conversation\, Dr. Jeffery Long\, a practitioner and theologian in the Vedanta tradition of Sri Ramakrishna as well as a scholar of process philosophy and Asian studies\, and Swami Padmanabha\, a leader and teacher in the Gaudiya Vaishnavism tradition of Hinduism\, will share their thoughts on resonances between their two Hindu traditions and process thought. \n\n\n\nThey’ll explore such areas as: \n\n\n\n\nThe dynamic nature of God and reality\n\n\n\nTexts and tradition as “ever fresh\,” especially in Vaishnava traditions and the tradition of Sri Ramakrishna\n\n\n\nHuman purpose\, consciousness\, and “radical personalism”\n\n\n\nAstonishment and surrender; divine will\, human choice\, and grace\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRSVP required to receive ZOOM info. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nrsvp at Process & Faith

SUMMARY:Process Pop-Up: The God of Tomorrow: Whitehead and Teilhard on Metaphysics\, Mysticism\, and Mission
DESCRIPTION:Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and Alfred North Whitehead came from very different religious backgrounds yet a study of their ideas shows a number of important and helpful synergies. \n\n\n\nIn this event\, Dr. Bruce Epperly\, a public theologian skilled at sharing process ideas in digestible ways\, will examine these two important thinkers’ ideas. He’ll show the ways in which their themes converge and examine how this synergy can help us plan strategies to join God’s adventure of the universe in our own spheres. \n\n\n\nIn his recent book\, The God of Tomorrow: Whitehead and Teilhard on Metaphysics\, Mysticism\, and Mission\, Epperly argues that both thinkers call for a theological adventure that embraces change and evolution and sees God as a dynamic and transformative force in the universe. Whitehead’s metaphysics of love and Teilhard’s metaphysics of spiritual evolution offer a synthesis that challenges traditional notions of God and invites us to recognize the mystical and transformative potential within ourselves. \n\n\n\nRSVP required to receive ZOOM info. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nrsvp at Process & Faith

SUMMARY:Work-in-Process Seminar | Daniel Bella: Cartesian Recurrences – On Whitehead and the History of Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:The Work-In-Process seminar series aims to provide a space for regular exchange between researchers working on the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead. As a hybrid between a seminar and a community event for all those working in process thought\, researchers will be given the informal opportunity to present and discuss their work in progress\, to receive input and use this space to build collaborations.  \n\n\n\nThe Work-In-Process series is hosted by the European Society for Process Thought and will take place online every two weeks\, alternating between Mondays and Fridays. \n\n\n\nThe seminar is completely free and we welcome everyone regardless of their academic position. If you want to present your own work or simply attend the seminar\, please get in touch with espt@milanstuermer.com to register. \n\n\n\nIn this session\, Daniel Bella will present on “Cartesian Recurrences – On Whitehead and the History of Philosophy.” \n\n\n\n\nLearn more
